is participating in the Columbia Basin Culture Tour on August 12 & 13, 2017

The Rossland Light Opera Players, the oldest musical theatre group in the BC interior, welcomes visitors to its rehearsal hall in the historic Bodega Hotel in Rossland.

We are throwing open our doors for two days to show the public how the magic of musical theatre is created. Discover how sets are designed, costumes created and how directors plan a show. You can experience the process actors go through when they are part of a show. Just fill out an audition form, pick a role from a play and magic will begin.

Bring your camera. We will be showcasing the backdrop from our latest production as well as past plays. Our second floor costume room will also be open for viewing. It is packed with hundreds of costumes, props used in past plays and also rented out.

Members will be available to answer questions and tell their stories of what drives them to spend countless hours memorizing lines, practicing music and building sets.

The RLOP began with Gilbert and Sullivan operettas in 1952. Eventually they presented well-known musicals, such as Guys and Dolls, The Sound of Music and Anne of Green Gables. The company has also nurtured local writers, who wrote shows based on Rossland’s early days as a mining boom town. This all-volunteer organization has entertained communities in the West Kootenay for 65 years.

Come and experience the thrill of making musical theatre.

Ken Turner of Rossland Paintworks has been contracted to do the work. Most of the work has been completed. Some restoration work on the bottom of the front wall has yet to be completed by Tom and Sue Buckley. A marquis box for the display of coming attractions is being built and will be installed on the outside of the building. Ken has restored the RLOP sign and jester and has put back the Bodega hotel sign to indicate the building’s heritage.

The Heritage Legacy Fund is sending a banner to publicize their participation in the project.

Although not part of the re-painting project, Janis Anderson is redecorating the display window to coordinate with the rest of the building.
