Synopsis:

Fiddler on the Roof (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Fiddler_on_the_Roof_%28film%29) is a musical with music by Jerry Bock (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Jerry_Bock), lyrics by Sheldon Harnick (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Sheldon_Harnick), and book by Joseph Stein (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Joseph_Stein), set in Tsarist Russia in 1905.

Premiering on Broadway (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Broadway_theatre) in 1964, it is based on Tevye and his Daughters (or Tevye the Milkman (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Tevye)) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Sholem_Aleichem). The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each one’s choice of husband moves further away from the customs of her faith—and with the edict of the Tsar (http://en NULL.wikipedia NULL.org/wiki/Tsar) that evicts the Jews from their village.
